Blues icon Roberto Di Matteo has hailed new Chelsea signing Timo Werner and revealed he twice tried to sign the Germany striker.
The 24-year-old will join up with his new team-mates at the end of the current season, and will hope to produce the same form in front of goal for the Blues as he has on a weekly basis for Leipzig.
The Germany striker has hit 32 goals in 44 appearances for Julian Nagelsmann’s side,, helping them rise to third in the Bundesliga while also qualifying for the Champions League quarter-finals.
“When I was at Schalke he was at Stuttgart and he was just coming on to the scene,’ Di Matteo told the official website
‘During the second part of the season, before I left, I was planning with my sporting director.
‘I was saying I wanted to sign this guy, he’s good. He was young, quick, technically good. I said “can we not sign this boy Timo”.
‘We didn’t in the end and then I resigned and so on. Then I went to Villa. Stuttgart, the season after, they got relegated, and so I enquired again to sign him, but then Leipzig signed him on.’
Di Matteo added: ‘I’m a big fan of his and he’s developed really, really well as well.
‘He’s a goal scorer, he scores goals, so he can guarantee a certain amount of goals for the team, which is very good, and he’s very pacey as well, he’s fast.’
Jurgen Klopp has ruled out a summer move for Chelsea transfer target Jadon Sancho
The Borussia Dortmund forward has been tentatively linked with a move to Liverpool in recent months, with reports suggesting that he is seen as the replacement for Sadio Mane, should the winger leave to sign with Real Madrid or Barcelona.
Sancho is one of the best talents in the game right now and the type of player that Jurgen Klopp loves, especially as he will not need to improve his squad ahead of next season.
Weare also very keen on the services of Sancho, although our interest has wavered a bit over the past few months as they are keen on a cheaper alternative in <a Kai Havertz
And now they have been handed a massive boost by Klopp, after the German boss opened up and admitted that he will not be making a move for Sancho in the summer window, but did admit the England star would “look good” in a Liverpool shirt.
Klopp was asked directly about Sancho at a live event hosted by German publication and replied: “A red jersey would look very good on Jadon. But I don’t think such a transfer will take place this summer.
“He is a very interesting player. If he moved to Liverpool, I would be the most surprised of all!”
Is Sancho comes to the Premier League, it will be very interesting to see just whom he joins, because he will become a very special player.
