Varane makes omission, Silva to sign new deal and Defender reveals why he joined Chelsea in Chelsea latest…
Ben Chilwell has admitted that he joined Chelsea to play in the big games.
Chilwell is easily regarded as one of the finest left-backs in the Premier League right now, and after his move to the Bridge, he now has seven assists and three goals this season as he fights for a place in Gareth Southgate’s starting line-up for England at Euro 2020.
And after establishing himself in this side, Chilwell has now opened up and revealed just why he signed with Chelsea, Speaking to talkSPORT, Chilwell said: “This is the reason I came to Chelsea. You want to be playing in so-called cup finals every week when you’re challenging for top four.
“We’ve got Real Madrid on Tuesday, which is stuff as a kid you dream about and we’ve got a cup final.
“It’s a reason I came to Chelsea and we’re excited. Every week is going to be an important game when we are challenging for silverware and top four.
“The Euros on top of that as well, we’re hoping to capitalise on that.”
The win over West Ham this week cemented Chelsea’s grip on a top-four place and the importance of the game was not lost on the players: “(It was) massive. Both teams are fighting for top four.
“We’re roughly on the same number of points, so we knew whoever won today would have a good chance of getting in the top four.
“Thankfully we won and we knew before the game the importance of it. The clean sheet is massive and to get the goal we were happy for Timo (Werner).”
Raphael Varane has addressed his contract situation amid reports that Chelsea are seeking a £100 million deal.
There has been alot of rumours in the media that the German boss wants to add a bit more quality in certain areas of the squad, and Varane has been a name that has been massively linked with a transfer move to Stamford Bridge.
The Frenchman is out of contract at the end of 2022 and reports have claimed Madrid are open to the idea of letting the Frenchman leave, but do not want to lose one of the clubs most important players for nothing, so they would reportedly be more willing to sell in the transfer window this time around.
But amid all the speculation, the Frenchman insists he isn’t looking that far ahead, Varane told a press conference: “My future is clear. I am focused on the end of this season.
“We are in a very intense and key moment.”
Pressed on whether he wants to remain at the Bernabeu beyond 2022, the 28-year-old responded: “It is normal that my focus is on the end of the season. The message to the fans is that I am 100 per cent committed to the team.
“We have challenges that encourage us a lot. I am focused on giving everything on the field.”
Look, if we are interested in adding another defender to that back-line in the summer, then they would be very wise to spend their money to try and land Varane. He really is that good of a defender a player that would help send a statement to the rest of the Premier League.
Jamie Carragher believes Chelsea attacker Christian Pulisic will never reach the same level as Eden Hazard
Regarded as one of the most exciting young players in world football, the club forked out alot of money to make sure that they were the club that secured a transfer deal just a few summers ago when Eden Hazard departed for the club.
But The United States international has endured an injury-hit start to life and has struggled to secure a regular role since Thomas Tuchel replaced Frank Lampard in January, but he is starting to show his quality in big games.
However, Carragher feels that Pulisic will fall short of being able to replicate Hazard’s instrumental performances on a consistent basis for the club: ‘I’m a big fan but I don’t think he’ll get to the level of Eden Hazard, apologies, he won’t,’ Carragher told CBS Sports.
‘Eden Hazard was the best player in the Premier League for four years and Belgian finished third in the World Cup [in 2018], he was the best player in the tournament – that is the level we are talking about with Hazard.
‘This is not me knocking Pulisic, it might look that on social media after the show from certain people. But I think we forget how good Hazard was.
‘He was my favourite player in the Premier League and for Pulisic to get there and to light up a major tournament for the US will be difficult.
‘Yes, I think he can have a brilliant career and he has a lot of potential but I don’t see him getting to that level.’
Pulisic does have a bright future in the game, but do fans agree with Carragher?
