Would Top-class Dutchman be a good signing for Chelsea?
Denzel Dumfries admits he is touched by rumours linking him to Chelsea, but is he really needed at Stamford Bridge
Reece James picked up a serious injury earlier in the season that has kept him out for a while now – and also kept him out of impressing at the World Cup with England.
He may be getting better and returning to action soon – but his departure has shown Graham Potter that he needs to delve into that transfer kitty and add another right-sided defender to the squad.
Dumfries is a player that the club have been eyeing up for some time – but have never made an official offer – but after seeing him impress at the World Cup – and according to reports on Goal – we are determined to sign the defender
The right-back put in a stellar performance in the Netherlands’ last-16 victory over the USA, scoring once and setting up two more in a 3-1 victory – and when asked about being linked with a move to Stamford Bridge, Dumfries recently said: “Of course it’s a compliment.
“But when you put the Nerazzurri shirt on that is also a big compliment.
“I’m focused on the national team, and I play for a very, very beautiful club in Italy. I’m very proud that I can play for Inter so I am focused on nothing else but the national team and Inter.”
Reporter Iomie Stanley told icfootballnews: ‘Chelsea do not need to splash the cash to sign a defender that will replace Reece James – just provide back-up.
‘The Dutchman is a starter – he is a player that will want to play every-game and that could cause issues.
‘James is one of the best wingbacks in the game, so Chelsea. should be looking to sign a player that will provide him good competition – be a good back-up but also be ready to sit on the bench and be happy.
‘There is no harm in having two quality wingbacks in the squad – but with both of them eager to play – Dumfries would be a very good signing if he is prepared to wait for his chances.
