Chelsea did contact Napoli over the potential signing of Dries Mertens in January, says Belgian football expert Kristof Terreur.

We had our transfer ban overturned back in November, meaning the Blues were able to sign players during the January transfer window and improve on a side that has struggled for consistency this season.

But despite all the talk, despite all the speculation and despite all the transfer rumours, boss Frank Lampard failed to make any meaningful transfer signings that would have improved the side, and he will have to get through the second half of the season with the squad that he has.

But there was a lot of talk that we were keen to try and acquire the services of Mertens for a bargain price during the winter window, especially as there were so many reports linking Olivier Giroud with a transfer switch away from the club.

Mertens is out of contract at Napoli at the end of the current season and therefore could be available on a free transfer, but despite receiving a call from the hierarchy about a possible move in January, he reportedly decided to stay at the Italians until the summer.

“It was an interesting phone call from Chelsea. I think they wanted him because he could play in four positions,” Terreur told the Transfer Window Podcast.

“He’s quite versatile and him and his missus have always liked London so if there was a chance to move to London, they wouldn’t reject that.”

Chelsea can seal a deal for Philippe Coutinho at a bargain price in the summer, but will they make the move.
