Paul Merson has questioned Gonzalo Higuain’s pedigree to play in a key role in the Premier League ahead of his proposed move to Chelsea.
After months of speculation and weeks of talks, reports in the media over the past few days have all suggested that Higuain has agreed a loan deal until the end of the season, with the option of a further 12 month deal if certain aspects of the deal are met.
However, there are some out there who believe that Higuain does not have the quality any longer to cut it in the Premier League, having failed to impress his current employers AC Milan this season.
And Gunners legend Merson is one of them, believing that we should have moved for a player that is already adjusted to the Premier League.
“I’m not sure on him,” Merson said on the Sky Sports website.
“He was a great player but looks below his best of late.
“He hasn’t pulled up trees for a while and now he’s coming to the hardest league in the world.
“He won’t have any time to adapt either as he needs to hit the ground running as Chelsea need someone to play as their focal point.
“I’d rather someone that has played in the Premier League before and knows what this league demands.”
Here is what we think
Higuaín is a world class striker that has proven that he can score goals wherever he has played, and under the guidance of Maurizio Sarri, he will adapt to the Premier League without much issues.
His age may be a factor but, who cares what Merson thinks.
If Higuaín does sign in the coming weeks, then we are looking forward to the Argentine proving Merson wrong.
