Chelsea sent warning ahead of possible January deal for Barcelona star Suarez

Former Arsenal striker and ESPN pundit Paul Mariner has claimed Denis Suarez would just be back-up if he made the move to Chelsea this January.

With the transfer window just a few months away, there has been some growing speculation over the last few days which has all suggested Maurizio Sarri is working on a deal to try and convince the unhappy Suarez to ditch Barcelona and make the mega money move to Stamford Bridge.

The 24-year-old has only made one appearance for the La Liga giants this season, in the Copa Del Rey win over C Leonesa last month, and is reportedly now ready to pack his bags and leave the club in search of some regular first-team football.

However, with the likes of Jorginho, Willian, N’Golo Kante, Mateo Kovacic and Ross Barkley just a few players Sarri is able to choose from, Mariner has claimed Suarez would only be used as cover for the current Chelsea midfield.

“Sarri’s had him on his radar for a long time,” Mariner said on the ESPN website

“When he was at Napoli he tried to sign him a couple of times. I don’t know why they need another midfield player. It looks as if they’re flushed in there.

“Maybe he just wants to get him in for cover. Sarri knows about him way more than I do. I just don’t see how he’s going to get playing time.

“I don’t see it (happening), I’m sorry, no.”

Is Mariner right? Here is what we think.

Suarez is a very good talent and just needs a manager that will be able to give him the kind of game time he needs to develop into the star that Barca had once hoped, but with so many quality players at the club already, there is no point in landing the midfielder as we do not need another bench warmer.

Suarez may develop into a big time player, but right now I would prefer what we have than to see a player arrive that will bring nothing to Stamford Bridge.
