Wow! Premier League legend tipped to make sensational Chelsea move

Nicky Butt has backed Frank Lampard to make a sensational return to Chelsea, insisting the Coventry City boss would do an “amazing job” if handed a third spell at Stamford Bridge.

Lampard, currently in charge of Coventry, has rebuilt his managerial reputation in the Championship. The 47-year-old is on the verge of leading the Sky Blues to promotion, with his side sitting comfortably at the top of the table in what has been one of the most impressive campaigns in the division.

Butt believes that progress has transformed Lampard into a far more complete coach than during his previous spells at Chelsea. Speaking publicly, he suggested that a return “wouldn’t be a stupid thing” and argued that the former midfielder is now a “totally different manager” capable of succeeding at the highest level.

Speaking on The Good, The Bad & The Football podcast, Butt said: ‘Do you think if Frank Lampard gets promotion with Coventry they could go back in for Frank?

‘He got the job too early the first time I think and he had the transfer embargo so he had to use a lot of young players. It wouldn’t be a stupid thing to go and get Frank Lampard back in charge of CHELSEA for me. He’s done a great job at Coventry.

‘He’s got a bit more experience now and he probably made a few mistakes the first time around. People need to understand that transfer embargo means you have to rely on loads of young players, that must have been difficult for him.

‘He would be a totally different manager now. I think Lampard would find it easier working with better players, it would be easier for him to get his messages across to more technical players.

‘If Frank went back into CHELSEA, with all the experience he’s got now, I think he would do an amazing job, I really do.’

Is Frank a good replacement for Rosenior?

At his best, Lampard encourages progressive, front-foot play, something that could align well with a club looking to build on Rosenior’s foundations. His experience at clubs like Chelsea and Everton means he understands the pressures of English football, even if results have not always followed. That experience could prove valuable in a demanding environment.

Ultimately, Lampard would represent a shift in direction rather than a like-for-like replacement. He brings profile, ambition, and a willingness to trust youth—but also uncertainty.

Whether he is the right choice depends on whether the club prioritises potential and style over proven managerial reliability.
