Chelsea have warned about signing Declan Rice this summer and using him in back four
Paul Merson has warned Chelsea not to sign Declan Rice with the idea of using him in a back four.
We may have a very exciting attack that can create and score goals on a regular basis, but that back-line and stopper area of the pitch looks very dodgy and cost Chelsea alot of points in the Premier League.
Their defensive issues were the main reason why they failed to beat Arsenal in the FA Cup, and then got knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich, and now that the transfer window is opened up, Lampard has admitted that he is keen to improve the defensive side of the squad.
But despite all the reports we are interested in Rice, Merson has warned the club about making a move for Rice and then trying to play him in the back-line, something that many believe Frank Lampard is keen to do.
Writing in his column for the Daily Star, Merson said: “Declan Rice is going to have choices this summer and I can see why Chelsea want him.
“He has become a top class holding midfielder for his age. He’s so disciplined, and I think it’s up to him how far he goes in the game.
“West Ham will have to get the right price if they sell. But I can see why Frank Lampard wants him.
“If you’re playing three at the back he ticks the boxes. He’d be comfortable in the middle of a three.
“I don’t really see him in a four, but he could play just in front of a four if they need him to. I can see where Lampard’s coming from.”
