Bayer Leverkusen’s sporting director Jonas Boldt has announced that they will not be selling Chelsea target Leon Bailey this January.
Regarded as one of the most exciting and talented youngsters in Europe, there has been some speculation in the media over the last few days which suggested that Maurizio Sarri is ready to splash the cash and try to bring the talented young man to Stamford Bridge as the long-term replacement for Willian.
Reports in the media over the last few days have suggested that Willian is all set to depart the club after his agent reportedly met with Barcelona earlier this month to discuss a possible £70 million move to La Liga.
Bailey still has over four years remaining on his current deal with Leverkusen and while the German club admit the winger will be sold at some stage, he will not be leaving midway through the season.
‘The conversation was good. We all know that Leon will eventually leave,’ Boldt told Bild.
‘But we have made it clear that a winter transfer is out of the question. He also knows that he has our backing.’
Would Bailey be a good replacement for Willian if the Brazilian departs the club?
Now Willian is an established player that brings such quality to the side that it would be very difficult to replace him if he decides to leave for Barcelona. But if there was one man that could come in and do a good job of filling the void of the Brazilian, it is certainly Bailey.
The youngster is showing great quality already and although he has a few more years of developing to do before he becomes the finished article, he would be a great investment by Sarri and the club.
However, right now he is not worth the £100 million that Bayer currently value him at and if we were to make a move, I would like to see that fee come down to around £50 million.
