Opinion: Should Chelsea make move and sign French world cup winner Varane instead of Koulibaly?

If Chelsea cannot seal a deal for Kalidou Koulibaly in the summer, then a move for Raphael Varane should be made.

We failed to get any business done during the January window, but it will mean that Frank Lampard will be able to delve into the clubs transfer kitty and add a few players to the squad in the summer that will add some experience, and quality in the right areas of the pitch, with Koulibaly linked with a move

The Powerhouse is ranked just behind Virgil Van Dijk as one of the best defenders in the game after helping Napoli become one of the best sides in Europe, but with his massive £150 million price tag putting a lot of teams off, we may have to make a move for a world class alternative, someone like Varane?

Admittedly, it’s not been the best year for Varane, and this year was less gold-tinged than the campaigns that preceded it, after an outstanding 2018 World Cup where the 26-year-old turned in superb performance after superb performance for winners France.

Varane is the complete central defender. He reads the game expertly and possesses the recovery speed to cover for team-mates’ mistakes, while he’s adept at stepping into midfield with the ball and setting his side on the attack.

It would be a massive ask for us to prise him away, and the Blues would need to get back inside the Champions League places first, but as we said in previous articles, the right offer will get the Spaniards at the negotiating table, and when they are there, anything could happen.

Lampard wants this side to get back into the habit of winning titles on a weekly basis, but he needs a few world class players first, and if they can seal a deal for Varane, they he could be a great partner for the impressive Fikayo Tomori.
