The agent of Daniele Rugani has claimed Chelsea made a ‘very strong push’ to sign the Juventus centre-back in the summer transfer window.

Despite our brilliant start to the new Premier League season and the fact we are now looking like real challengers for Manchester City’s title, there is a growing feeling around England that Maurizio Sarri needs to add a top class defender to sit alongside David Luiz, as Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are simply not good enough.

And that has led to speculation that the Italian is dead keen on the signing of Rugani, who is easily regarded as one of the finest talents in Serie A after a number of impressive performances for Juventus.

Now his agent has confirmed that we ‘made a very strong approach’ to sign Rugani, which Juventus reportedly considered, agent Davide Torchia told RMC Sport radio: ‘Chelsea made a very strong push to negotiate, Juve evaluated it, but the player never asked to leave. His objective was to earn his place in the starting XI.

“Juve believed in the player and we’ll discuss it during the contract renewal talks. It expires in 2021, so there is no urgency, but we cannot wait too long either.’

Would Rugani be a good fit for the club? Here is what we think.

The young man has all the attributes to real Italian legend and that is why many have compared him to a young Paolo Maldini, who is arguably the greatest Italian defender to ever grace the game.

He also has youth on his side which means he could be a great long-term investment, while his composure on the ball makes him the ideal man to sit alongside Luiz at the back and ease the tension every-time the Brazilian gets on the ball.

And despite rumours Kalidou Koulibaly is also on the shopping list, there is something about Rugani which would make him a better buy.
