Gianluca Di Marzio has opened up and claimed that Chelsea FC have spoken to Dries Mertens about a possible summer deal.

Chelsea were able to delve into their transfer kitty this transfer window after getting their transfer ban overturned just a few months ago.

But despite all the talk, and despite all the speculation surrounding possible new signings, Frank Lampard has been unable to complete the transfer deals that he would have liked and will now have to wait until the summer to get his transfer deals done.

And that has led to speculation in the media suggesting that a new striker will be a priority for the Blues boss, as he needs to add a top-class forward to help Tammy Abraham out with the goals, with Mertens constantly linked with a free move to Stamford Bridge.

Now in a Q&A with Sky Sports, @_harrisonV Aasked: “What is happening with Dries Mertens and Chelsea? and Di Marzio responded…

“Chelsea have wanted Dries Mertens since January.

“In January, they offered €10m despite his contract ending in June. But Napoli said no because they wanted him to break the club’s record of goals.

Di Marzio added: “Now his contract is ending and, in this moment, he is not renewing with Napoli. The deal with Napoli is in a difficult way and I know Chelsea want him again.

“They are talking to his representatives, Frank Lampard has spoken to the player and they are pushing forward to convince Mertens to accept their offer.”
