Welsh winger target Rabbi Matondo has revealed why he rejected Chelsea and opted for Manchester City in 2016.

Like Jadon Sancho, Matondo departed Manchester City’s academy for better opportunities in the Bundesliga and the Liverpool-born Wales international has impressed in Germany’s top flight this season.

Recent reports have claimed Ole Gunnar Solskjaer views Matondo as a ‘low-risk buy’, as was the case last summer when they spent £15million on Swansea speedster James.

Now Matondo has opened up and now announced that there was interest from us before making that mega move to City, the 19-year-old, now at Schalke, said on the Metro: “City were interested a year before I moved [from Cardiff]. Everyone in Cardiff knew about it.

“At the time I was not 100 per cent sure that I was ready to leave my home. Cardiff is my city.

“After my father and my agent had looked at the youth academy in Manchester, they were so enthusiastic that they told me I would be crazy if I didn’t take this opportunity.

“Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham were also interested in me.

“The way City persisted in trying to get me convinced me in the end.

Manchester United legend Ryan Giggs claimed Matondo’s phenomenal speed ‘always keeps you interested’ as a spectator: ‘I was slightly surprised when he went [to Schalke], but he is a talent,’ Giggs said on the Metro.

‘If he is half as successful as Sancho has been so far I’ll be happy.

‘He was really good with us in Albania [Wales’s last game in November]. I thought he did really well when he came on.

‘Just like Dan James he has electrifying pace. And that always keeps you interested.

‘Obviously after that you have to develop. If a full-back works you out you have to have that Plan B. But both are talented players who could hurt teams.’
