Signing announces ‘this is the perfect time for me to join Chelsea’
New CHELSEA Women defender Ashley Lawrence has discussed fresh starts after it was confirmed the Canadian has joined the Blues
Supporters will no doubt be looking forward to seeing Lawrence in action for Chelsea next season, and the Canadian international has given us an insight into what to expect from her when she pulls on the blue shirt.
‘I would define myself as a modern day full-back, adding a lot of dynamic on the field. Defensively, I’m relentless! I love one-v-one battles and I have a lot of experience with the Canadian national team and playing with another top club in Europe, defending against top strikers and wingers.
‘On the flip side, going forward putting in quality crosses, being box-to-box and dominating out wide.’
‘I have been following the Women’s Super League. It’s great because you can watch the games on the FA Player app, so it’s accessible to everyone not only in England but all over the world. The league is very exciting, it’s a competitive league and it’s not easy to win.
‘Every game is a challenge. Chelsea have done an amazing job with the amount of trophies they’ve won. It’s not an easy league to be part of and also fighting for European titles as well.’
‘Especially after England won the Euros, I’ve seen the growth in women’s football especially in England. They are a driving force in that field, they’re investing in the women’s game and the fans are coming out to support.
‘It’s on a forward trajectory and this is the perfect time for me to join Chelsea, to be part of this team, this amazing club but also to play in this league. I’m excited for the challenges ahead.’
‘It’s really cool to have two fellow Canadians who are already here at CHELSEA and two top Canadian players. We won the Olympics together and it speaks volumes about the mentality they have and that I have with that experience under your belt. We all have a very competitive mindset and I’ve seen how they have been able to add a lot to Chelsea.
‘Jessie is a few years younger but plays beyond her years and Kadeisha is such a consistent player. She is such a solid defender and a great addition for Chelsea. On the field, it’s amazing because I know how they play and off the field, it will be great for me to get adjusted in a new country. I’m really looking forward to it.’
