Chelsea praised for Silva signing

CHELSEA  are interested in a free deal for Man United defender Rafa Varane.

Varane was meant to be a massive signing for Man United after he made the decision to leave Real Madrid just a few transfer windows – and many tipped him to show the class he has been over the years.

However – injuries, poor performances and the inability to adapt to the quality of the Premier League has meant that he has been a £300,000-a-week flop at Man United and the decision was made this month to leave at the end of the season.

Now Fichajes reports that we are looking at Varane as a top contender to take Thiago Silva’s place after the Brazilian star also made the decision to leave the Premier League at thee end of the season.

Despite Varane’s underwhelming performances in Manchester, former star Johnson recently urged his old team to move for the Frenchman in the summer.

Asked about a potential deal, he told Betfred: “Yes, definitely. Good players like that don’t come around often and they certainly come around less often on a free transfer.

“I know he’s not the Varane he was three or four years ago but he’s still a bloody good player.

“Yes, he’s had his injury problems but that’s what outweighs the transfer fee.

“If you’re buying him on a free and he’s only playing 50% of the games, then that’s still a good deal to do.”

“As we saw with Thiago Silva, those sort of players who have done everything, played for top teams and clubs, they get the attention of the dressing room.

“They’re the big names that the younger players want to look up to and obviously they’re great to have around.”
