Long-standing CHELSEA target Mats Hummels has been released by Borussia Dortmund.

The defender helped the German giants reach the Champions League final, which they lost 2-0 to Real Madrid – but will now be a free agent this summer after the club allowed him to depart the side.

This follows after Edin Terzic headed out of the exit door after the Dortmund boss resigned over a bust-up between the pair, and the news will give the club the chance to get a transfer deal done.

Enzo Maresca is seeking to improve his squad this transfer window and is hoping to get some backing from the board – as he knows that there needs to be massive improvements in key areas of the squad.

He may not be in his prime – but he showed last season that he is still able to keep pace with even the best of attackers – so if Maresca is looking to add some experience and leadership to the side, Hummels could be his guy.

Many doubted that Thiago Silva would be able to play in the Premier League because of his age – but top defenders know how to play the game and Hummels could certainly teach that back-line a thing or two.
