Frenchman Giroud opens up and reveals just why he has agreed to sign with Chelsea
Olivier Giroud has opened up and revealed just why he has decided to stay at Chelsea this season.
There was a lot of transfer speculation in the media over the past few months about the imminent departure of striker Giroud, who has become very unhappy in the side this season after falling behind Tammy Abraham in the pecking order.
It seemed that he was all set to depart the club when his contract expired and his contract at the club run out, but we shocked many fans just a few days ago when they announced that Giroud had committed himself to another 12 months at the Bridge.
After coming close to moving away from the club in the January transfer window, he provides an insight into how things have changed and why he decided to stay.
He told the club website: ‘I was supposed to leave in the January transfer window because I wasn’t playing much and I needed more game time to make the France squad for Euro 2020.
‘I very nearly left the club but I really think that God wanted me to stay at Chelsea.
‘The manager told me that he couldn’t let me leave because he didn’t have anyone to replace me. Everyone knows what happened so I won’t go back over it but the coach spoke to me privately and told me that he’d give more games.
‘He kept his word and what then mattered to me was proving to him that he could count on me when I was called upon.’
It was a massive shock to see that Giroud will be staying at the club, especially with all the transfer speculation surrounding a possible transfer move away. But we are glad that he has signed back up, he will add something to the side until we are able to sign a new striker.
