Massive £120m on works: Chelsea in talks as top-class act to make late move
Manchester City have reportedly tabled an official offer to Chelsea for Enzo Fernandez as Pep Guardiola’s side look to strengthen their midfield before the summer transfer window closes.
The approach represents a major development in Fernandez’s future, with the Argentina international having established himself as one of Chelsea’s most prominent players since arriving at Stamford Bridge.
Fernandez joined the Blues from Benfica in January 2023 after helping Argentina win the World Cup in Qatar. Chelsea invested heavily in the midfielder, making him a key part of their long-term project.
Despite his importance to the squad, City’s reported interest could now force Chelsea to consider whether the time has come to part company with the 25-year-old.
Manchester City have been looking to strengthen their midfield options and Fernandez’s technical ability, passing range and experience at the highest level make him an obvious candidate for Guardiola’s system.
An official offer also demonstrates the seriousness of City’s interest. While Chelsea are under no obligation to accept the proposal, the situation could develop quickly with the transfer deadline approaching.
The Blues have already been active in the market and are reportedly close to bringing in Monaco midfielder Lamine Camara. His potential arrival has inevitably added to speculation surrounding Fernandez, although there is no guarantee that one move is directly connected to the other.
For Chelsea, losing Fernandez would represent a significant decision. The midfielder remains capable of influencing matches from deep and has become an important figure within the squad.
However, the reported interest from City could provide an opportunity for Chelsea to reshape their midfield while receiving a substantial financial return.
Opinion: Fernandez now needs to leave Chelsea
There is a strong argument that Fernandez should seriously consider leaving Stamford Bridge if Manchester City’s interest develops into a concrete opportunity.
The Argentine has shown flashes of the player CHELSEA believed they were signing, but his time in west London has also been marked by inconsistency and constant changes around him.
A move to City would offer Fernandez something Chelsea have struggled to provide consistently: a settled, highly experienced structure built around controlling possession and competing for major honours every season.
Working under Guardiola could also take his game to another level. The Spaniard has an outstanding record of improving technically gifted midfielders, and Fernandez’s passing ability could make him particularly suited to City’s style.
For CHELSEA, selling would be painful, but a major offer could give the club the chance to reinvest in a more balanced squad.
