Chelsea can wrap up £200k-a-week signing: Giants offer world class act to Alonso

Chelsea have reportedly been handed a major opportunity to sign AC Milan winger Rafael Leao after Arsenal and Manchester United ended their interest in the Portugal international.

According to reports emerging on Tuesday, Leao has been offered to Chelsea as his future at Milan continues to dominate the transfer headlines. The 27-year-old has been heavily linked with a move away from San Siro this summer, with both Arsenal and Manchester United previously considering a move for the talented attacker.

However, the two Premier League clubs have now seemingly cooled their interest, opening the door for Chelsea to potentially secure a deal.

The reported asking price could make the opportunity particularly attractive. Leao has reportedly become available for around £34 million, a figure that would represent a significant reduction on the kind of fee expected for a player of his reputation and experience.

Leao has established himself as one of Serie A’s most dangerous attacking players since joining Milan, combining explosive pace with strength, dribbling ability and an eye for goal.

His versatility could also make him particularly useful to Chelsea. Although naturally comfortable operating from the left, Leao is capable of playing across the frontline, giving Xabi Alonso another high-quality option in the final third. Reports have also suggested that Chelsea could be looking at attacking reinforcements amid uncertainty surrounding Pedro Neto’s future.

Opinion: Chelsea should snap him up

If Leao really is available for approximately £34 million, it would be difficult to argue that CHELSEA should simply ignore the situation. The Portuguese winger has already demonstrated that he can perform at a high level in one of Europe’s major leagues, while his physical attributes would suit the intensity of Premier League football.

Most importantly, Chelsea need players who can consistently make things happen in the final third. Leao can carry the ball over long distances, beat defenders and create opportunities from seemingly nothing. That ability could provide Chelsea with an attacking dimension they have sometimes lacked.

There is also relatively little financial risk at the reported price. CHELSEA have spent heavily in recent windows, but £34 million for a proven international attacker in his prime would look considerably more appealing than gambling a similar amount on an unproven prospect.

Arsenal and Manchester United stepping away could ultimately prove to be Chelsea’s gain.
