Chelsea star torn about whether or not to leave in the summer window
Cesare Azpilicueta is torn about whether or not to leave Chelsea, but is in no mood to talk about all the rumours and speculation right now
Azpilicueta has featured 18 times in the Premier League, but has also made 15 appearances in other competitions as he is one of the most solid performers that Thomas Tuchel currently has at his disposal
However, The captain’s current deal was due to expire in the summer, and his representatives had already held talks with Barcelona regarding a move to the Nou Camp on a free transfer.
And all suggestions indicated that he would be packing his bags, selling his house, jumping on a plane and signing a nice contract with the Spanish giants to finish off his top-level playing days back in his homeland
And that was further enhanced by the news that Chelsea would be unable to open contract talks, sign new players and let players leave the club at the end of the season while Roman Abramovic was still in charge and the club was not sold
Barcelona – with their financial constraints – have been quick to sign players on free transfers over the last two years with the likes of Memphis Depay, Sergio Aguero, Eric Garcia and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joining the club.
The Catalans are willing to offer the defender a three-year deal to move to the Camp Nou but Azpilicueta was in no mood to talk about moving to Spain.
‘It’s not the right place and the right moment to discuss my future,’ said the Spaniard, when asked about leaving Chelsea.
Speaking last month, Thomas Tuchel said he wanted to keep the defender.
‘He’s super important, he was super important from day one. We had a good connection from the first day, which is always important and you always look for as a coach,’ said Tuchel.
‘He gets better with every game he plays, he’s an example, a leader by doing and leading by example. Which is always super, super nice to have. Now he collects so many trophies and has had an incredible career at one club, which is outstanding.
‘He embodies everything that Chelsea stands for; being relentless, being humble but being a warrior at the same time. And I don’t think there are people who don’t wish for the very best for him and don’t like that he has all these trophies; he deserves it.’
