Chelsea will have to break world record to sign defender Gimenez from Madrid as £109 million wanted
Chelsea will have to break the world record transfer fee for a defender to sign Jose Gimenez from Atletico Madrid, reports the Sunday Times.
We have already conceded more goals at the back than any side in the top 10 of the Premier League, and will not be able to challenge for that title if frank Lampard does not get the defensive players that will improve the side.
And that has led to speculation in the media which have claimed that we are lining up a possible transfer move for the very impressive Gimenez, who is very highly-rated over in La Liga.
But if we want to bolster their defensive ranks with Uruguay international Gimenez they have been told they will have to pay £109.1m, which will break the transfer record for a defender in the game.
Bleacher report journalist Dean Jones has recently come out and claimed that Chelsea are seeking to add a bit of authority to the back-line, a bit of leadership, something that Gimenez would be able to bring to the side.
Speaking to TalkChelsea, Bleacher Report journalist Dean Jones said: “They want a centre back and left-back as priority.
“They are not alone in this problem – Liverpool, Man City, Man United all need a new, good centre back too,”
“I’m told Chelsea just want someone to come in and show some authority and bring more confidence to those around them
“I’m not sure which defenders will end up leaving – to be honest there are only a couple that are definitely safe.”
Gimenez is a world class defender, but surely he is not worth that £109 million?
