Bayer Leverkusen star Leon Bailey has admitted Chelsea were chasing him during the summer transfer window, reports have revealed.
The 21-year-old is one of the most promising young forwards in Europe and was wanted by several top clubs in the summer after having another impressive campaign for the Germans.
And new boss Maurizio Sarri was one of the men that were reportedly interested in trying to nail down his signature, as the Italian looked to add a bit more pace, skill and creativity to the side ahead of the new Premier League season.
But Bailey explained it was not the right time to make such a big move and opted to sign a big contract in the summer to commit his long-term future with the club.
‘Manchester United, City, Chelsea, Liverpool – a lot of clubs were interested,’ Bailey told FourFourTwo.
‘But the most important thing as a pro is taking things a step at a time and not rushing to the top too quickly. Because once you get there, where do you go next?
‘I believe the right timing is important, and it was the right moment to be at Bayer Leverkusen. They are a tremendous club with so much history.
‘A lot of good players have come from there; they can get into the Champions League and are always doing well. So why not them? ‘It was the perfect move for me and I’m happy I made it. My focus isn’t really on moving anywhere yet.
‘I’m just about what’s happening right now rather than what could happen in the future. I’m still learning.’
Could we see Bailey at Stamford Bridge during the future?
The lad is showing great potential and ability, so the idea that we could make a move and turn him into a superstar is something that appeals to us, especially with all the uncertainty of Eden Hazard and his potential move to Real Madrid.
But for now Bailey needs to stay put as he is developing nicely, and when the time is right, bring him to the club as he will certainly be a great investment.
