Contract ‘has automatically been extended’ as Chelsea fans get some good news
Cesar Azpilicueta’s Chelsea contract has been automatically extended by one year, according to the latest reports which have emerged out of Spain
Azpilicueta has featured 18 times in the Premier League, but has also made 15 appearances in other competitions as he is one of the most solid performers that Thomas Tuchel currently has at his disposal
However, The Blues captain’s current deal was due to expire in the summer, and his representatives had already held talks with Barcelona regarding a move to the Nou Camp on a free transfer.
And all suggestions indicated that he would be packing his bags, selling his house, jumping on a plane and signing a nice contract with the Spanish giants to finish off his top-level playing days back in his homeland
And that was further enhanced by the news that Chelsea would be unable to open contract talks, sign new players and let players leave the club at the end of the season while Roman Abramovic was still in charge and the club was not sold
However, according to Marca in Spain, a supposed clause states that a one-year extension would be triggered if the player made 30 appearances in his final season.
The situation is, of course, made more complicated by Chelsea’s current predicament. However, while the club are not allowed to offer new deals to players, the automated nature of this development is thought to be unaffected by Government sanctions
If the reports are true and Azpilicueta will be staying at the club for next season, that is massive news for the club, as they will need all the players that can get when the summer window opens up.
The Spaniard has been world class for us for some time now, so fans want him to stay. So we will sit and wait for the official announcement to come through, as there will be alot of speculation until that happens
